On this page you'll find a range of supervision resources.
I've particularly focused on resources that I think will be useful to people new to attending supervision, but I've popped in some of my favourites too which are also relevant to experienced supervisees or supervisors. I've indicted for each resource who I think would benefit from it.

The Craft of Supervision by Dr Mish Seabrook, on Spotify. While this podcast uses the term 'clinical' supervision, there is a lot of information which could be useful for people new to the area of supervision. If you are new to attending supervision, or being in the role of supervisee, episode 2 'What is clinical supervision?' and episode 4 'Being a supervisee' might be of particular interest.

It's About Practice: An Essential Guide to Getting the Most out of Your Supervision (Hurman, 2024). This is a fantastic book if you're new to engaging in supervision. It introduces readers to the concept of supervision, it's elements of reflection and the importance of self care, by covering enough of the basics to started without being overwhelming. It's not theoretical, it's an easy, helpful and practical read. A large section of the book is in the format of a journal to support you to prepare for and record your supervision sessions. I think the section of how to choose a supervisor, and what you should get from supervision are essential to those new to supervision, and I'd recommend this book to all new supervisees.

Skills of Clinical Supervision for Nurses: A Practical Guide for Supervisees, Clinical Supervisors and Managers (Bond and Holland, 2010 2nd Ed). As the title suggests this book is aimed at different stakeholders in supervision, but don't be put off if you're new to supervision. For new supervisees and people new to the concept of reflection, chapter 4 'Supervisee skills of in-depth reflection' is a very helpful read, which provides bigger picture explanations as well as practical ways to get you started in practicing reflecting. Also - don't be put off if you're not a nurse - the majority of this book can be applied to everyone engaging in supervision.

Best Practice in Professional Supervision (Davys & Beddoe, 2020 2nd Ed). This book is aimed more at supervisors, however, it gives a very helpful introduction to the history of supervision, and introduces the reader to the functions of supervision and important elements such as the supervisory relationship. I find this book helpful to gain an oversight of professional supervision, and is easy to read.

Applying the therapeutic function of professional supervision: Attending to the emotional impacts of human service work (Weld, 2023). This is one of my absolute favourite books on supervision. It is aimed at supervisors, and weaves together theory, practical approaches and personal experience to cover the gold that is the therapeutic function of supervision. To any new supervisees or supervisors, chapter 1, 'Defining the therapeutic function of supervision' helpfully distinguishes between different types of supervision (line management, clinical supervision and professional supervision).

One More Time: What is supervision? written by Michael Carroll (Psychotherapy in Australia, Volume 13, Number 3, May 2007). This article provides a brief history of supervision, and looks at the importance of it and elements involved. It is a paper from an academic journal and reads as such, but there are helpful descriptions of what supervision looks like in practice, the importance of reflection and of taking that forward to transform our practice. For those new to supervision I think the latter part of this paper can be helpful in gaining an understanding of what supervision looks like in practice. This article can be accesses for free from Scribd (although there are a few ads to be patient with).
